Photography Goals for 2017

Happy New Year! I hope 2017 is off to a great start for all of you. Nathanael and I caught part of the New Year's Eve fireworks on our way to a delicious dinner in downtown Victoria. Afterwards we met up with friends for drinks and festivities near the Inner Harbour. It was a fun night out on the town ringing in the new year!

I thought I would start this year with a blog post on my travel photography plans. However, as some of you know, we've had some health issues in our family, and right now it's difficult to plan that far ahead. We will definitely be traveling, but on shorter notice until things settle down. So instead of travel photography plans, I've changed this post to travel photography goals.

1. Improve frequency of blog and vlog posts

One thing I really want to do this year, is to update both my blog and vlog more frequently, and ideally, consistently. To share more stories and images with you, I'll need to get out exploring more often, so it's win-win! The greatest challenge here will be time to put it all together into a post or vlog, but it's fun creating both.

2. Explore my own backyard

This year marks Canada's 150th birthday, so it makes sense to try and see as much of my own country as possible. To me, this exploration includes parts of Canada I've never seen (like the Yukon), to those I haven't visited for a looong time (like the Maritimes), to old favourites (like the Gulf Islands). On a smaller scale, there are places that fit each of these categories just within Greater Victoria (or any city for that matter), so even when we can't get too far away, there should be lots to explore.

3. Improve my videography skills

Ok, this is technically not a photography goal, but it's so close that I'm including it! Videography is still pretty new for me as my camera and mobile for the longest time did not even have video capacity...and then when I upgraded, it took a while to actually remember I could film footage! I know...! Anyways, it's not something I've done a lot of yet, but I want to improve those skills, as it's a more interactive way to record and share adventures and memories.

4. Build up my stock photo portfolios

The images I license through my stock photo agencies are currently a mix of subjects - some travel, some not. Over the next year, I want to build up these collections, adding more images as well as footage, with the emphasis on travel subjects. The reason is simple - that's just what I enjoy photographing most!

5. Explore farther

As much as I want to see more of Canada this year, I also want to travel abroad! I always enjoy the chance to go to a new country and experience the culture and customs there. I'm sure that some overseas travel will be part of my 2017 photography, but when and where are yet to be determined. Five places I would especially love to explore are Italy, Iceland, New Zealand, Japan, and the Galapagos Islands, but there are many more and I'm excited to see where the year takes us.
